I’ve been tossing around the idea of organizing a discussion and whiteboarding event anchored by Eric Schabell, Keeny Peeples, and myself. Server Side Web Frameworks, The Last Stand

October 16, 2013

I’m a fan of client / server architecture. I believe that…

  • the front end should be limited to the presentation tier
  • the back end should be limited to the logic / data tiers
  • the presentation tier should be separate from the logic / data tiers
  • the presentation tier should integrate with the logic / data tiers

I believe that the front end, the presentation tier, should be executed on the client and that the back end, the logic / data tier, should be executed on the server.

It’s All About Navigation

Today’s web application often have to provide easy navigation user experiences to the customers to provide the latest and greatest to be accessible by the customer.

For example, a website may want to offer rich, customized menu navigation rather than the out-of-the-box menu portlet or site map portlets. More often than not, the menu may need to visually indicate the current page that it’s on.

Mobile Redirect

Different devices can be redirected to appropriate website to provide the best user experience.

For example, you can setup a redirect for all of the iOS devices, and a separate redirect for Android devices.  Alternatively, you can also use JavaScript to detect whether the browsing device is touch-enabled – and then redirecting them to proper destination.

But there is more.  Let’s dive into some of these features in more details from top to bottom.

One Design – Everywhere!

How can you design portlets and portal applications that are useable on desktop browsers, but also useable on a mobile platform, such as a smartphone or a tablet?  That is typically a problem with existing portal implementations and difficult to deal with.  In fact, some may need to resort to custom code that will check for mobile devices based on user agents, and then redirecting mobile user to a different website.
